Hi there, my friends call me John “Tobacco Leaf” Carver, and I’ve dedicated my life to the world of tobacco, from its horticulture and cultivation to its industrial production and marketing. I was born and raised on a tobacco farm in North Carolina, USA, where the sweet smell of curing tobacco would fill the air each harvest season. Today, I’m based in the UK, bringing my transatlantic perspective to the European tobacco industry.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the industry’s biggest names, including British American Tobacco and Altria Group. During my time at BAT, I led a team of agricultural scientists in pioneering a new disease-resistant strain of tobacco, a feat that earned us the Tobacco Science Research Conference’s Innovation Award in 2021. At Altria, I worked in product development and was part of the team that created the Marlboro HeatStick, a smokeless tobacco product which was a game-changer in the industry.

Despite my corporate career, I’ve never forgotten my roots as a tobacco farmer. That’s why, in 2020, I co-founded the International Tobacco Farmers’ Association to advocate for the rights of growers worldwide. Under my leadership, we’ve managed to secure fairer pricing agreements for farmers in over 20 countries.

When I’m not knee-deep in tobacco leaves or corporate boardrooms, I’m quite the outdoorsman. I love hiking in the British countryside, rain or shine. I’ve also recently taken up fly fishing – there’s nothing quite like the thrill of a catch! I’m an avid reader too, mostly of historical fiction. I find it fascinating to explore different times and places through the pages of a book.
